We hear the warning all the time: don’t go to bed without washing your face. But what’s so important about that step? And how does it even affect your skincare routine? We’re covering all the things you should know about cleansing below:
Facial cleansing is the act of washing your face to eliminate dirt, oil, makeup, pollution, or impurities in order to get your skin oh-so-clean. The one product you need to do this? A good facial cleanser.
A good cleanser not only gently removes all the gunk and leaves your skin feeling clean and fresh, but it also gets your skin ready for the next steps in your skincare routine or preps it for applying makeup.
Cleansing your face properly clears the skin of any makeup, residue, and oil build-up on the face. It’s an essential part of a daily skincare routine and helps to prevent pores from clogging which can cause acne. Cleansing your face is also important when you are prepping the skin for make-up or when you’re applying serums and moisturizers.
A cleanser is one of those products that comes in an overwhelming amount of different forms: from balms and wipes to foaming gels, micellar waters, and creams.
But when it comes to choosing which form of cleanser is best for you, we’d suggest you choose the texture that works best for your skin type:
Gel: deeply cleanses and is effective at decongesting clogged pores and removing excess oil and acne-causing bacteria. Ideal for: Oily and combination skin.
Cream: gently cleanses your skin without stripping it of its natural oils. Ideal for: Dry and sensitive skin.
Foam: good for removing excess oil as effectively as gel cleansers and are a tiny bit more gentle on skin. Ideal for: Oily and combination skin.
Oil: offers a gentle way of removing pore-clogging gunk without drying out your skin. Ideal for: Most skin types.
Micellar water: features “micelles'' that attract oil, dirt and makeup - and you don’t need to rinse them off with water. Ideal for: Dry and sensitive skin.
Balm: removes oil-based impurities and free radicals that can lead to breakouts and premature aging. Ideal for: All skin types but work best on dry and oily skin.
Cleansing should happen twice a day: once in the morning when you wake up and once at night before you go to sleep.
Even if you don’t wear make-up every day, it’s still important to wash your face regularly (ideally, twice a day). For these two reasons, alone:
WARNING: DO NOT OVER CLEANSE
Yes, over cleansing is a real thing and it’s always important to make sure you’re not doing it. A tight, “squeaky clean” feeling may sound attractive but it probably means you’ve stripped your skin and disrupted its natural moisture barrier.
A compromised barrier can leave your skin susceptible to premature aging, breakouts, and increased sensitivity - so make sure you’re finding a cleansing routine that feels right for you AND your beautiful face!
