Genetics, age, and bone structure aside, these daily little beauty habits (that most of us don’t even realize we do!) can quickly add up to wrinkly, aging under eyes over time.
1. Forgetting to moisturize.
Having a solid moisturizing routine on lock is key for a number of reasons but when it comes to eye care, it’s even more important. Your under eyes (and outer edges…hello crow’s feet!) aren’t as fortunate in the oil gland department as the rest of your face, making them more prone to dryness, dehydration, and puffiness. Moisturizing effectively not only helps promote moisture retention but also can prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming. Just be sure to always gently use your ring finger while massaging it into your skin.
2. Slacking on drinking water.
This one is obvious. Dehydration = a fast pass ticket to aging skin.
3. Scrubbing or rubbing your eye area (yikes!)
Okay, we are all guilty of scrubbing the s**t out of our face when removing our makeup from time to time...
While it’s super important to remove your makeup before going to sleep at night, it’s even more important to do it gently. Aggressive makeup removal can tug at and damage the sensitive, delicate under eye skin. To make sure you don’t have to work so hard to remove makeup, opt for a very thorough cleanser that will easily melt away your eye makeup in one go.
4. Skipping an eye treatment.
It feels like the hunt for an effective eye treatment that *actually works* is neverending. And while it may feel like under eye treatments don’t work, trust us - they do! The skin around your eyes is the thinnest skin on your entire body, making it much more sensitive and susceptible to damage. So an eye cream is one of the most important components of your anti-aging regimen but it’s also one of the most commonly overlooked.
5. Using the wrong eye treatment.
So you’ve finally opted in to believing in the magic of eye cream…but you chose the wrong one. It’s true, not all eye creams are equal.
For fine lines and wrinkles: use something with an anti-aging ingredient like retinol. Hey, we know a pretty good Retinol Eye Stick that is pretty effective. Wink-wink.
For dark circles: look for creams with brightening ingredients like vitamin C and niacinamide.
For puffiness or bags: find something with an energizing ingredient like caffeine. Or just use Peace Out Puffy Eyes.
6. Lack of sleep.
It’s called beauty sleep for a good reason! When you don't get enough restorative sleep at night, your blood vessels dilate. This causes an increase in blood flow, and since the skin under your eyes is thinner, the dark tint caused by the increased volume of blood is more noticeable.
7. Not wearing sunscreen.
Our #1 skincare rule: always wear the SPF. Too much exposure to the harmful rays of the sun can expedite the entire aging process.
